I just finished this book which I spotted a few days ago on the DeLand library’s new non-fiction bookshelf. A Most excellent book full of Indian culture, heritage & how Native Americans strive to keep it. I found the discussion outside of the, Veronique I think this to be a fair review although I can only give an opinion following a book club discussion. The heart of the story is interesting and certainly worth telling, but much of what she writes about will be of little interest to anyone outside of her family or historians. They prospered here, though her father committed suicide several years after he arrived. The biggest “take-away” for me from this book was that “life was all about moving forward” which may explain why many survivors did not talk about the past. There are many personal accounts of the Holocaust out there, but I think this new memoir may be the first I've read from the child of survivors, exploring what it's like to grow up with that sort of household trauma hanging overhead. I also agree that very often today the impact of a novel thoroughly researched can give so much more than a chronicle of facts. It really is a documentary about the history of Native Americans. Welcome back. This beautifully written book flowed so smoothly I felt was having coffee with Ms. Foer as she told her story. Wittstock also does an amazing job providing incredible information to go along with Bancrofts great photos. Yes the discussion was really wonderful and I s should have left it at that. We’re Still Here is a nice change of pace from similar novels (Hillbilly Elegy, Dreamland) because it takes an objective stance and tells stories directly from the people living in the rust belt and shows how it forms their civic and political engagement.
