For today’s Masterpiece Monday post I am featuring this visual development painting of Jim Hawkins and John Silver for the film Treasure Planet. (NOTE: Re-edited and re-uploaded to comply with Disney's Claim. The idea came from their experiences watching an Italian mini-series entitled Treasure Island in Space. ( Log Out / Coming off their success on The Great Mouse Detective, Musker and Clements proposed two film ideas at the meeting. Treasure Planet is a 2002 American animated science fiction action adventure film produced by Walt Disney Feature Animation and released by Walt Disney Pictures on November 27, 2002. It's just... Insanely well made. The deal was struck and in the late-nineties they finally began developing Treasure Planet. One of these was Treasure Planet the other was The Little Mermaid. Overall, the movie has a pretty emotional background to some insanely fun and cool scenes, from action sequences to wholesome conversation, to THOSE visuals. The Flawed Beauty of Treasure Planet: A Disney Animation MasterpieceThe Masterpiece Series, Episode 3: Walt Disney fought his entire life to prove that animation was not simply a filmmaking genre, but an art form capable of the highest caliber of beauty and wonder. The film is a particular favourite of mine, because I love anything with pirates in it, and I feel that it does not get nearly enough acknowledgment. Treasure Planet is a goddamn masterpiece. In this video essay, I attempt to explain why I believe Treasure Planet exemplifies this fact! I feel it is the perfect illustration of the film’s blending of traditional and sci-fi. As an avid collector of beautiful editions of classic novels, I immediately fell in love with the quaint traditional style of this painting of the cyborg John Silver and Jim Hawkins. I get all emotional in those first seconds. Based on Robert Louis Stevenson's Treasure Island, it follows the story of young Jim Hawkins who dreams of life filled with adventure on other legendary planets. Hell, the first seconds of the movie introduce you to the most beautiful violin/fiddle sound in the universe. Parents, teachers, and the like are welcomed to participate and ask any questions! Our subreddit is primarily for discussions and memes that an average teenager would enjoy to discuss about. AND THE MAIN THEME, goddamn it's just insanely good! Treasure Planet was a cinematic masterpiece and it flopping at the box office is the biggest crime to ever happen to animation. A live-action adaptation would be justified and incredibly good (sci-fi, no dumb songs, space n shit). I'D DEFINITELY GO SEE THAT SHIT! Press J to jump to the feed. Treasure Planet is the 43rd full-length animated feature film in the Disney Animated Canon. I recently started reading Disney Pirates: The Definitive Collector's Anthology by Michael Singer. It discusses all of the Disney film's that involve pirates, and there is a small section on Treasure Planet. Never fails to hype me up, it's my second favorite movie music piece of all time (the first is the Avengers theme lol). To encourage this they created a “70/30 law” for the artists. Although Treasure Planet is a sci-fi film, the director still wanted to be able to incorporate some of the 18th century pirate elements of the original book. It's... Something else. An in-depth, heavily-researched look into the Disney Classics from every era! Years later after the release of Aladdin, Musker and Clements once again proposed Treasure Planet and were once again told no. That year Disney executives Michael Eisner and Jeffrey Katzenberg held a meeting called the “Gong Show” where animators proposed ideas for new films to them. They liked the idea of creating a sci-fi updated version of Treasure Island, and thought the concept would work even better in animation. When he meets old Billy Bones, his life takes a major turn as he discovers that Treasure Planet may just be real after all. IT'S PERFECT. Going along with this mantra, the film’s visual development artists took inspiration from the Brandywine School of illustration and gave their concept art a warm, painterly feel. So they struck a bargain with the executives, the team would direct the adaptation of Hercules that the studio was currently developing, if afterwords they were allowed to finally direct Treasure Planet. ( Log Out / Change ). I just love every second of it, and if I ever have kids I wanna watch it with them (probably cry a little bit but yeah). I watched it as a kid but y'know, sometimes you like some awful stuff as a kid so you gotta confirm if it's really good. ( Log Out / Treasure Planet received a sequel in 2002 in the form of a video game called Treasure Planet: Battle at Procyon, which is a real-time strategy, naval combat game. While skimming through some concept art for the film, I discovered this gorgeous visual development painting and just had to feature it. While the executives had no interest in Treasure Planet, the idea of The Little Mermaid did catch their attention, and so Musker and Clements went on to direct that film. It discusses all of the Disney film’s that involve pirates, and there is a small section on Treasure Planet. ( Log Out / Change ), You are commenting using your Facebook account. In the end, the years of delay worked to the film’s benefit, as by that time animation technology had developed to a point that allowed the directors to better achieve their vision of a spectacular outer-space action-adventure film. I really feel that the style of this art really came across well in animation, and it’s part of why I find the film to be such a unique and enjoyable film.
