After Julian’s older brother Billy (Tom Burke) is murdered by the initiation of a much-respected police officer, Chang (Vithaya Pansringarm), he is pressed by his Mafioso mother Crystal (Kristin Scott Thomas) to avenge his brother’s death. There’s a scene early on where Julian sits absent-mindedly, watching while a woman pleasures herself, though not before binding his arms carefully to the chair he sits in. And Refn is certainly from that different plain. Boxing relies on the battering of your opponent with your fists; early on, Julian loads a revolver to be used in getting revenge for Billy’s death; Chang metes out justice, lopping off arms as payment for crimes with his magically-appearing Thai Dha blade. Although the top billing goes to Ryan Gosling, the real star of this is Vithaya Pansringarm’s Angel of Vengeance. The story follows Julian Thompson (Ryan Gosling), a damaged drug smuggler striving in Bangkok who manages a Muay Thai boxing club as a front for his criminal operations. On a purely technical level, Only God Forgives is a masterpiece. The father is then escorted out, his arm extended in a plea for mercy when Chang’s blade comes down, severing the arm. Hell-bent on seeking retribution for the loss of her first-born, Crystal puts both her remaining son and other gangsters into motion in order to deliver the heads of those responsible. “I’m sorry.” She plays her cards. For those who were expecting a sort of Drive 2 actually would have experienced a film which has far more in common with Valhalla Rising than anything else. Call it diminishing returns, but while his films since 2013 have been fascinating and I, as a fan, can watch them on end, there’s something so gut-wrenching in Only God Forgives that it almost feels like a rebirth of the man’s work. You must at least appreciate Refn's gorgeously wicked style to enjoy ONLY GOD FORGIVES. Ryan Gosling is amazing as usual but the rest of the cast is great as well. The anticipation coursing through me as I took my seat was palpable. It has more in common with Sci-Fi movies such as Blade Runner than it does with any normal fight movies, and intersperses mournful love songs crooned in Thai Karaoke style with alien tones and booming indications of the violence which about to rear its head. It’s bizarre, almost as if they’re being delivered a sermon. The film was shot on location in Bangkok, Thailand, and, as with Drive, is dedicated to Chilean director Alejandro Jodorowsky. Danish director Nicholas Winding Refn floats back into our lives after leaving the bittersweet taste of 2011's best film, Drive, on the tip of our tongues. However the two images most commonly used are that of Ryan Gosling in a classical boxing stance, eyes completely blank and face seemingly void of emotion. The “eastern western,” that is the samurai film, might come to mind with Chang’s slicing and dicing, and some of the gunplay, though minimal, might recall the explosive squibs and shrapnel of a John Woo gangster film. This makes Only God Forgives his film in the limelight. The story was there and it was so obvious to me that when people say that the story is non-existent, I am actually confused. Killed in cold blood by Chang, her death is repentance for all the lives lost on the end of her orders.
